Amen! D’Angelo Is Back!!
Sh-t. Damn. Motherf—ker! If you love D’Angelo like we do, this one’s gonna give you chills. GQ presents the neo-soul legend’s first extended interview and his first photo shoot in more than a decade. Here’s a brief bit of GQ correspondent Amy Wallace’s spellbinding profile, and click here to read the whole thing.

Shame, guilt, repentance—D’Angelo knows them well. To say that he was raised religious doesn’t begin to capture it. He’s the son and the grandson of Pentecostal preachers. To D’Angelo, good and evil are not abstract concepts but tangible forces he reckons with every day. In his life and in his music, he has always felt the tension between the sacred and the profane, the darkness and the light.
“You know what they say about Lucifer, right, before he was cast out?” D’Angelo asks me now. “Every angel has their specialty, and his was praise. They say that he could play every instrument with one finger and that the music was just awesome. And he was exceptionally beautiful, Lucifer—as an angel, he was.”
But after he descended into hell, Lucifer was fearsome, he tells me. “There’s forces that are going on that I don’t think a lot of motherfuckers that make music today are aware of,” he says. “It’s deep. I’ve felt it. I’ve felt other forces pulling at me.” He stubs out his cigarette and leans toward me, taking my hand. “This is a very powerful medium that we are involved in,” he says gravely. “I learned at an early age that what we were doing in the choir was just as important as the preacher. It was a ministry in itself. We could stir the pot, you know? The stage is our pulpit, and you can use all of that energy and that music and the lights and the colors and the sound. But you know, you’ve got to be careful.”

Van Hunt-Hidden Charms

Damn… this motherfucker can write a SONG! I’m a big fan of the music of course of it all, but when there are some bomb-ass, fine opportunity for important introspection kind of lyrics on top of the whole thing, fuck…it’s a done deal. And when you can just deliver it desperado style, on some you and your guitar against the world type-a shit, goddamn it, what a beautiful thing, artistry at it’s finest, no gimmicks necessary. Thanks Van Hunt. Love, the human race.

Bread

I feel 12,000 years old. I used to read about past lives and I think (yea yea yuck it up) I buy it. After this life cycle I’m going to heaven i think… if the math and karma is right haha.

I’ve had to grow up a lot lately. Maybe I’ve always been mature, but grown-up is different. Facing the nitty gritty of the unpleasant things in life, the frustrations and all that grime after the sparkle goes away. Love your life privileged tumblr community, tomorrow is unpromised. I’m still learning to allow people into my life. I’ve had a spew of people call me mean weeks within each other, mostly friends, so that twisted my reflection of myself. Maybe I don’t need such a  shield anymore. Maybe it’s just natural. But you know, I just want to take care of people, albeit in a very selfish way, like that catcher in the rye shit. But I fear others taking care of me. Why? Such a distrust you have developed there youngin’. That’s probably not “the way” lol. In fact I’m sure it isn’t. There’s always another side of the story and that’s important, it saves me most times to remember that. The promise of possibility.

Anyway whatever, your 19 year old shit don’t leave you til your 25  I hear so forgive the blabbermouth….older people always remind me i’m barely out of the womb still…..

did you make it this far with me?  haha

When things clear up at home the private selfishness of my mind that uses future thinking as a coping method urges me to travel. Anywhere. It’s so easy to get caught in forgetting just how big this whole  thing is and how small you are and how the earth keeps turning whether you’re with it or not. If you’re not careful this might even make you sad. It’s true the more the know the more you don’t know, but maybe by pursuing   you can at least get a taste of it. The answer.. or something. That thing. I wanna touch the dirt of Egypt, swim in Morocco, breathe in the holy land, all that goody goody ancient future connect with the aura of the world kind of shit. But any spot in the world was built on the same things that built any other. Need, seed, feed, greed, mystery & repeat….

So my point? None, just sayin’. Pencil it in wherever. I’m making it it a goal to get around the world, there you go, used a lot of words to say it. I’m still a musician, my life will always be that.

Anyway, so much rain. Take care.
