A fond memory of 2011: I got to see two of my biggest musical inspirations (who are still among the artistically and physically living) in the same week, Prince and Cody Chesnutt.
Prince had the big arena (symbol stage, guest stars, lights, smoke, fireworks, purple rain, errythang) show and The Family Stone minus Sly opened for him which was a very big deal for me. Needless to say it was killin and for the $100 nosebleed ticket I painstakingly hovered over my laptop to cop I felt satisfied. He’s still the baddest musician ever.
Cody had the smaller more intimate show and he played new songs that showed his new “holy man of the earth” persona, very different from that crazy schizo soundin fuckin’ black dude who made that incredible album that i prayed to every night. I even got to speak to him for a while after the show and sludge through some kind of camera interview as well. He was still the pseudo saint I always thought him to be, just more human now.
Anyway, they represent two sides of the music world popularity coin and they both have heavily paid their dues to get where they are. I hope to do the same.
